⚠️ Alaska groceries run pricey (everything's shipped in). Get the free Fred Meyer loyalty card, and stock up before Denali & the Homer end — stores thin out. There are no hookups in Denali, so fill water & dump in Anchorage first.

ℹ️ Good to know — tips, rules & safety

The practical Alaska stuff that makes (or breaks) a family RV trip — driving the rig, campground know-how, state laws, wildlife, and staying safe with two kids in bear & moose country.

🚐 Driving a Class C in Alaska

  • Know your height (~10–11 ft) — mind gas canopies, branches & drive-thrus; there's no "oops" with the roof.
  • Long gaps between gas — fill up before Homer's far end, before Denali, and along the Parks Hwy; don't drop below half a tank.
  • Frost heaves & gravel pullouts — slow down; dips can launch loose gear. Secure everything before driving.
  • Wildlife on the road (moose!) — especially dawn/dusk; a collision is serious. Scan the shoulders.
  • Engine-brake the grades (Seward & Parks Hwy) — drop a gear downhill, don't ride the brakes.
  • Before every drive: steps up, unplug, latch the fridge/cabinets, stow cord & hose. Use a spotter to back up.

🏕️ Campground know-how

  • No hookups anywhere inside Denali — fill fresh water & dump at the Riley Creek Mercantile (free for campers); generator hours only.
  • Confirm the rig's gear: drinking-water hose, pressure regulator, sewer hose & leveling blocks.
  • Reserve ahead — Seward waterfront, Homer Spit full-hookups (only ~10!), Riley Creek & Talkeetna all fill in peak season.
  • Bear lockers / clean camp — never leave food or scented items out.
  • Many sites are gravel & exposed — the Homer Spit is windy; bring layers.
  • 18–20 hrs of daylight — bring eye masks; real "dark" never comes.

⚖️ Alaska rules & laws

  • No statewide sales tax, but some boroughs/towns add a local tax (Homer, Seward, Kenai) — Anchorage has none.
  • Fishing licenses required at 16+ — buy online before you cast (the king-salmon stamp is separate).
  • Car seats: rear-facing under age 1/20 lbs; a car seat to age 4; booster until age 8 (or 4'9" / 65 lbs).
  • Cannabis is legal for 21+ but illegal on all federal land (Denali, Kenai Fjords, national forests) and in public.
  • Headlights on at all times on many highways; seatbelts for everyone.
  • Bear spray is legal & smart — but you can't fly home with it; donate or leave it at the end.

  • America the Beautiful pass ($80) covers Denali entry; Kenai Fjords has no entry fee. Worth it.
  • Denali Tundra Wilderness Tour (to Mile 43 in 2026) — reserve at reservedenali.com; the Savage River shuttle is free.
  • Kenai Fjords cruise — book the 6-hr NP cruise (Major Marine or Kenai Fjords Tours).
  • Alaska fishing license — buy online at ADF&G before you go.
  • Flightseeing (Talkeetna) & halibut charters (Homer) — book early, stay weather-flexible.
  • Kachemak Bay water taxi for the Grewingk Glacier hike.

🐻 Wildlife & safety (read this one)

  • Bears (black & grizzly): make noise on trails, carry bear spray, store food in lockers; never get between a sow & cubs.
  • Moose are the bigger danger — never approach, especially cows with calves; they charge. Give a wide berth.
  • Turnagain Arm mudflats are deadly (quicksand-like + a fast 6-ft bore tide) — stay off the mud at Beluga Point.
  • Cold water everywhere (rivers, the bay, glacial lakes) — life jackets on kids always; hypothermia is real.
  • Mosquitoes are fierce (Denali, Cooper Landing) — repellent & long sleeves at dusk.
  • Emergencies: dial 911. Hospitals: Providence (Anchorage), South Peninsula (Homer), Central Peninsula (Soldotna), Providence Seward. Cell service is patchy.

🌡️ Weather & what to pack

  • Cool & wet even in summer: 50s–60s°F days, 40s–50s nights; August is the rainiest month. Pack layers, rain shells & waterproof shoes.
  • Rubber boots (locals live in Xtratufs) for the Spit, beaches & muddy trails.
  • Warm layer + hat/gloves for the Kenai Fjords cruise — it's cold & windy on the water.
  • Eye masks / blackout for the 19-hr daylight; sunscreen & lip balm for the long sun.
  • Bug spray, binoculars, first-aid kit, headlamps.
  • Quick-dry clothes — things stay damp up here.

👧 With the kids

  • Junior Ranger at both Denali & Kenai Fjords — free badges that keep them engaged.
  • Motion sickness: the all-day boat cruise & the flightsee both warrant remedies — dose ahead.
  • Car seats in the RV: confirm proper belted seats — many dinette belts are lap-only; ask Indie.
  • Wildlife bingo, the sled-dog puppies, tide pools & beachcombing on the Spit are big hits.
  • Balance big days with downtime; the endless daylight wrecks bedtimes — hold the routine.

📵 Connectivity, gas & supplies

  • Cell dead zones around Seward, Cooper Landing, the Homer end & Denali — download offline Google Maps per region and save your confirmations first.
  • Gas up early & often — before Homer's far end and before Denali; stations are sparse and pricey.
  • Propane: top off in Anchorage — you'll want the furnace on cool nights.
  • Restock at the pinned 🛒 stores; nothing big near Denali — load up in Anchorage/Wasilla.
  • Carry some cash for small towns & first-come fees.
  • Keep the rig's carbon-monoxide detector on with the furnace/generator running.

✅ Book in this order

Peak season, and Alaska inventory is the constraint. Lock the hardest-to-get things first.

  1. Flights — ✅ you have them (Alaska AS 53 / AS 56, Jul 22 & Aug 2). Make sure the four seats are together.
  2. Fix the RV dates — change the Indie Campers booking to pick up Jul 22, drop off Aug 1 so it matches your flights, and confirm the Anchorage pickup point.
  3. Kenai Fjords cruise (Thu Jul 23) — book the 6-hr NP cruise now; peak-season sailings fill.
  4. Homer Spit full-hookup (Jul 25–26) — only ~10 full-hookup sites; book ASAP (months ahead is normal).
  5. Denali — Riley Creek (Jul 28–29) + Tundra Wilderness Tour (Jul 29) at reservedenali.com.
  6. The rest of the campgrounds — Seward Waterfront (city Campspot), Cooper Landing, Talkeetna Camper Park, an Anchorage RV park (Jul 27 & the Aug 1 final night), plus an Anchorage hotel for Aug 1.
  7. Optional extras & passes — Talkeetna flightsee, a Homer halibut charter / Kachemak Bay water taxi, Alaska fishing licenses, and the America the Beautiful pass ($80).

Your RV and flight dates don't match — which wins?
→ Anchor to the flights (Jul 22 → Aug 2) and move the RV to Jul 22 pickup / Aug 1 drop-off. Same 10 nights, same rate — and the flights are the booked, harder-to-move piece. (If you'd rather keep the RV on Jul 28–Aug 7, rebook the flights instead and I'll shift every date on this page.)
Denali — 2 nights or 1? (the 2026 road closure)
The Park Road is open only to Mile 43 in 2026 (Pretty Rocks landslide — full access returns 2027). The front country still fills ~2 days: the Tundra Wilderness Tour, Savage River, sled dogs & abundant wildlife. → Default keeps 2 nights; trim to 1 and add it to Seward or Homer if you'd rather maximize the coast.
The Talkeetna flightsee — worth it?
→ Yes, if the budget's there and the weather cooperates. A Denali glacier-landing flight is the trip's once-in-a-lifetime "wow." Book a flexible window (it's weather-dependent). Skip it to save ~$1,000–1,400 for four.
Homer day — which adventure?
→ A Kachemak Bay water-taxi + the Grewingk Glacier Lake hike is the best all-ages pick. Choose a halibut charter if the kids will fish, or a bear-viewing flightsee (Katmai/Lake Clark) for the premium splurge.
Getting home on Aug 2
→ Drop the RV Aug 1, hotel night in Anchorage, fly out 11:05am Aug 2. An ~11am RV return can't make an 11:05am flight, so the hotel night makes the last morning stress-free.
