ℹ️ Good to know β€” tips, rules & safety

The practical stuff that makes (or breaks) a family RV trip β€” driving the rig, campground etiquette, Oregon laws, and staying safe with two kids at altitude.

🚐 Driving a Class C

  • Know your height (~10–11 ft). Watch low clearances, gas-station canopies, drive-thrus & tree branches β€” there's no "oops" with a roof.
  • Mountain passes (US-26 over Mt Hood, Hwy 138): go slow, drop to low gear and let the engine brake downhill β€” don't ride the brakes.
  • Never take the RV on the narrow Historic Columbia River Highway or up to Multnomah Falls β€” park & ride the shuttle.
  • Backing up? Always use a spotter. Favor pull-through sites (most of your picks are).
  • Before every drive: retract steps, unplug, stow cord/hose, latch the fridge & cabinets, secure loose gear.
  • ~8–10 mpg, wide turns, long stopping distance β€” leave extra following room.

πŸ•οΈ Campground know-how

  • Check-in ~1–2pm, check-out ~11am; quiet hours ~10pm–7am (generators off).
  • Hookups: full = water/electric/sewer. Many state/NPS sites are electric-only or none. Confirm your rental includes a drinking-water hose, pressure regulator, surge protector, sewer hose & leveling blocks.
  • Dump the tanks before leaving non-sewer parks (Tumalo, Silver Falls, Mazama) β€” dump stations are free–$25.
  • Campfires: Oregon often has fire restrictions in late July β€” check current rules before planning one, never leave it unattended, and buy firewood locally (moving wood spreads pests).
  • Bear country: use food lockers where provided; never leave food or scented items out.
  • Arrive before dark β€” setting up at night with kids is no fun.

βš–οΈ Oregon rules & laws

  • No sales tax in Oregon β€” the tag price is what you pay (nice for gear & groceries).
  • Gas: Oregon has allowed self-serve since 2023, but plenty of stations still pump for you β€” just wait at the pump if you're unsure.
  • Bottle deposit: 10Β’ per can/bottle β€” return at stores/BottleDrop for the refund.
  • Car seats: rear-facing until age 2; harness until 40 lbs; booster until 4'9" tall or age 8 (whichever first).
  • Seatbelts required for everyone; kids ride only in belted seats while moving.
  • Cannabis is legal for 21+, but illegal on all federal land (national parks/forests) and in public.

🎟️ Passes & permits

  • America the Beautiful pass ($80) β€” covers Crater Lake entry + federal day-use (Lava Lands, Tumalo Falls). Buy it; it pays for itself here.
  • Crater Lake entry $30/vehicle (or the pass).
  • Smith Rock day-use $10/vehicle; many Oregon parks are free.
  • NW Forest Pass ($5/day) for some trailheads (Tumalo Falls, McKenzie).
  • Multnomah Falls $2 timed permit (or ride the shuttle).
  • Lava River Cave $2 timed ticket (Fri–Mon; releases ~7 days out).
  • Crater Lake Trolley β€” reserve at craterlaketrolley.net.

🐻 Wildlife, safety & emergencies

  • Black bears in the Cascades β€” store food, lock the rig, use lockers; nothing edible left out overnight.
  • Mosquitoes are fierce at Crater Lake & Diamond Lake in July β€” bring repellent & long sleeves for dusk.
  • Cold, fast rivers (Deschutes float, McKenzie) are snowmelt-cold β€” life jackets on kids, always.
  • Altitude: Crater Lake's rim is ~7,100 ft β€” hydrate, take it slow, and use sunscreen (UV is stronger up high).
  • Never feed chipmunks/jays (they bite β€” and it's illegal in parks).
  • Emergencies: dial 911. The major hospital on-route is St. Charles in Bend; keep a first-aid kit handy.

🌑️ Weather & what to pack

  • Big day-night swings: Bend high desert 85–95Β°F days, but Crater Lake nights can drop to the 30s–40sΒ°F even in July β€” pack layers + warm jackets.
  • Swim gear + water shoes (lakes, river float, hot springs), closed shoes for hikes, fleece/beanie for the rim.
  • Cave kit: jackets (42Β°F) + 2 light sources per person for Lava River Cave.
  • Sun & dry air: sunscreen, hats, lip balm, refillable water bottles.
  • Bug spray, first-aid kit, headlamps.
  • Possible wildfire smoke late July β€” check air quality (AirNow) and keep an indoor backup (museum) in mind.

πŸ‘§ With the kids

  • Junior Ranger at Crater Lake β€” free badge, keeps them engaged; grab the booklet at the visitor center.
  • Car seats in the RV: confirm the rental has proper belted seats that fit your seats β€” many dinette belts are lap-only; ask the rental company.
  • Motion sickness: winding mountain roads (US-26, Hwy 138) β€” have remedies, snacks & window views ready.
  • Balance hikes with downtime: resort pools, lake swims, the tube float.
  • Audiobooks/podcasts + a "spot the wildlife" game β€” download before you lose signal.

πŸ“΅ Connectivity, gas & supplies

  • Cell signal disappears around Crater Lake & Diamond Lake β€” download offline Google Maps for each region and save your booking/trolley confirmations first.
  • Gas up before Crater Lake (and the North Umpqua leg) β€” stations are sparse and pricier in the park/forest.
  • Groceries & ice: restock at the pinned πŸ›’ stores β€” load up at Costco Bend, nothing big near Crater Lake.
  • Propane: top off in Bend/Eugene if you'll run the furnace on cold Crater Lake nights.
  • Carry some cash for first-come fee tubes / small towns.
  • Keep the rig's carbon-monoxide detector on, especially with the generator/furnace running.

βœ… Book in this order

Peak July, ~3 weeks out β€” inventory is the constraint. Lock the hardest-to-get things first.

  1. The RV β€” RVshare or RV's To Go. Get a live quote for Jul 18–28 & confirm the mileage cap (~1,000 mi loop).
  2. Flights β€” Alaska/Delta Main Cabin, LAX⇄PDX, 7/18 & 7/28.
  3. Crater Lake β†’ Mazama Village on recreation.gov β€” today. Very few full-hookup sites on a peak weekend; take any tier left, or fall back to Diamond Lake RV Park.
  4. Oregon State Parks (only if choosing Tumalo or Silver Falls) β€” reserveamerica; 6-month window is open & weekends fill.
  5. Private resorts β€” Mt Hood Village, Bend/Sisters Garden (call 541-549-3021), Premier Eugene, Sun Outdoors Portland South.
  6. Permits & timed tickets (set phone alarms): Multnomah Falls $2 permit (releases 14 days out, or ride the shuttle) Β· Lava River Cave $2 ticket (releases 7am ~Jul 13, Mon-only) Β· Crater Lake Trolley Β· buy the America the Beautiful pass ($80) to cover Crater Lake + day-use fees.

πŸ’΅ Budget estimate

Planning ranges (excludes food). Confirm live quotes at checkout β€” RV & flight prices are dynamic.

ItemEstimate
RV rental (10 nights, premium Class C)$2,700–3,500
Flights (family of 4, round trip)$1,250–1,750
Campgrounds (10 nights)~$600–750
Fuel (~1,000 mi @ 8–10 mpg)~$400–550
Park fees + activities (pass, trolley, museum, floats)~$350–550
Total (excl. food)~$5,300–7,100

❓ Your decisions & the answers

Everything you asked, resolved β€” plus the few choices still open. My recommendation is in green.

Region β€” Oregon or NorCal?
β†’ Oregon loop from Portland. Tightest round-trip (least driving = your relaxed pace), the most marquee nature, the best cluster of premium full-hookup resorts with pools, and the cheapest LAX nonstops. Say the word and I'll re-plan around NorCal/Redwoods instead.
Dates β€” before or after your Jul 13–15 block?
β†’ After: fly out Sat Jul 18, back Tue Jul 28. A "before" trip would mean departing ~Jun 29 β€” impossible to book premium peak-season RV + campgrounds in time. This gives 3 rest days after your block and 5 before school (~Aug 2).
Crater Lake β€” 2 nights or 1? (the one real swing)
2026 is a heavy construction year: boat tours, Wizard Island, Cleetwood Cove (lake-shore access) & the East Rim Drive are all closed. The West Rim overlooks, trolley tour, Junior Ranger & short hikes stay open β€” still a stunning view, but now ~1–1.5 days of activity. β†’ Default keeps 2 nights for the relaxed pace; tell me if you'd rather cut to 1 and add it to Bend or a coast detour.
RV β€” which rental, given the Saturday start?
β†’ RV's To Go is the best value (newest fleet, free generator/prep) but it's closed weekends β€” so for a Sat Jul 18 start either pick up Friday Jul 17, or go with Cruise America (open Saturday), or have a premium rig delivered (Outdoorsy/RVshare). All three depots are pinned 🚐 on the map. Easiest clean Saturday option: Cruise America or a delivered rig.
Trip length β€” 10 nights or trim?
β†’ 10 nights as mapped (top of your 8–10 day ask, relaxed). Easy to trim to 8–9 by dropping a Bend or the Eugene night β€” just say so.
Want me to take it further? I can (1) build a booking checklist with exact deadlines, (2) drop the whole itinerary + reservation-deadline reminders into your Google Calendar, (3) add 2 Oregon Coast nights by trimming Crater Lake, or (4) flip the whole thing to a NorCal / Redwoods loop. Just tell me which.
